Often we fail to understand or claim our inheritance that God promises. We have read about it in the scriptures, heard about it in sermons and maybe we’ve even contemplated it a bit. But do we truly understand what the inheritance is and how to walk in it?
Our Inheritance study will provide a guideline in which to study our inheritance and what it means to us as Christ followers. The materials may be used for independent study or in a small group format. You can also listen to this study on Coffee and the Word.
In each lesson, we will read and discuss scripture and how it applies to our lives today. Questions will be provided to promote online discussion and prayer. There is much to be gained from discussion with others, whether it is online or in person.
Don’t be shy! Weigh into the discussion with your thoughts, questions and observations.
Always begin your Bible study with prayer. Praise God and ask Him to reveal His truth and how it applies to your life. Be open to what the Lord tells you through the study of scripture and your life will be enriched beyond belief!
And if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. Romans 8:17
That having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. Titus 3:7
Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Galatians 4:7
Who are we according to these scriptures?
Romans 8:17 says we are "joint heirs" with whom?
The dictionary defines the words heir and inheritance as follows:
Heir: a person who inherits or has a right of inheritance in the property of another following the latter's death.
Inheritance: something that is or may be inherited; property passing at the owner's death to the heir or those entitled to succeed; legacy.
In our culture today, an inheritance is the end result of a legal document called a Last Will and Testament. This document states that the deceased has assigned their possessions (inheritance) to a specific person or persons (heir). If prepared properly, this document is binding and cannot be changed after the writer’s death. It serves as a guarantee that when the writer of the will dies, their instructions will be carried out and the designated recipient will receive the inheritance. An inheritance usually comes from a family member and is most often material possessions: money, property, jewelry, furniture, etc.
As Christians, God is our wealthy Father and we are members of His family. He has loved us, redeemed us, adopted us and made us heirs by His grace. The inheritance we have coming from God is greater than anything we can imagine and nothing on earth compares!
Something to Think About:
Have you ever been named in a will or received an inheritance? If so, how did you feel when you discovered you were an heir?
What does it mean to you personally to be an heir to the King of Kings?
What does it mean to be a co-heir of Jesus Christ?
In Lesson 2, we will look at how we enter in to our inheritance, both now and in the future.
If you would like to read ahead, our focus scriptures will be Galatians 3:26-29, Galatians 4: 4-7, Ephesians 1:18-19, John 3:5.
